AVERAGE SIZE: 20 feet tall by 8 feet wide. GROWTH RATE: Medium LEAF: Greenish-yellow pinnate fronds (shaped like a feather) range from about 2 to 6 feet long. Yellow leaf stems. FLOWER: Inconspicuous GROWING CONDITIONS WATER: Once established, low water requirements. CARE: Remove whole fronds as they yellow. To trim an Areca to show the trunks, remove the small growth at the base. The round, shrub-like appearance is much easier to maintain, as new growth will continually appear at the base. Arecas are some of the most commonly seen palms in south Florida. They make an excellent, inexpensive screening. They will block out an unattractive view as quickly as they are planted.
Arecas are a good choice for those who want a natural
look, not for those who want a perfect, dark green palm without any brown
fronds. The natural color of the leaf stems is yellow. For a low maintenance
palm, expect some brown fronds.
